NBU Business Faculty FAQ (Note: most questions are answered for Business Faculty students, so if you are from another faculty, some of the following information may be incorrect. This is also a work in progress. If the information you are looking for is not here now, please submit questions and it will be answered, and eventually added to an updated FAQ).

1. Where is the...?

2.Where can I get my student card, where and how do I add money, and what can I do with it?

You can get your student card from the International Office in AnZhong Building, Room 603, or you can get help from the Students’ Affairs Office in Bao YuShu Building 11, Room 423.

You can add money to your card at the Card Service Center near the southern gate of the school, which is an independent, one-story building (across from the milk tea place).

If your card is lost or stolen, you should first check the front desk, or the first floor of the building you lost it in. If you still cannot find it, you can apply for a new card in the lobby of BaoYuShu Building 7.

3.Where is the library, and what can I do there?

There are two libraries on campus.

One is the BaoYuGang Library (the one with the clock tower). Open hours from Monday to Thursday are 8AM to 8PM, except Tuesdays it is closed from 11:15AM to 4:30PM. On Friday it is open from 8AM to 4:30, and Saturday from 8:30AM to 4PM. The library is closed on Sundays. Undergraduate students can take up to 20 Chinese and 4 foreign books at a time for up to 45 days each. You can renew the books for an additional 30 days thereafter. You will be charged 0.05 RMB per book per day for late returns. You will not be allowed to graduate from the school until all books are returned, and/or late fees are paid.

The other, is in BaoYuShu building 8 (open from 8AM-10PM every day), is a digital library with access to recent magazines and newspapers. All print material must stay within the library.

Open hours for both hours may extend during exam periods.

4.How can I check information about my timetable, grades, school calendar, etc?

You can get assistance with most of the above items in Bao YuShu building 11, Room 419. Locate Mr. Zhu, and he should be able to help you.

5.Where can I learn Chinese?

Of course, the easiest way to learn is to practice with the Chinese students on campus (or, you know, you’re in China… you should be able to find Chinese people to talk to). The faculty also offers Chinese as part of the freshman curriculum.

For further information about the HSK test, which is arranged once per semester, please contact someone in Bao YuShu building 10, Room 301.

6.How can I purchase things from Chinese online shops such as JingDong, Amazon, etc?

Most online retailers do not have an English option, so if you would like to purchase something and cannot understand Chinese, it is best that you have a Chinese person assist you.

Most sites accept major credit cards, but if they do not, you may also be able to find a Chinese person to help you with this as well.

Items purchased online will be delivered to either the front desk of your residence, or close by. Some retailers have designated delivery areas, and they will inform you by text upon delivery.

School Address: Ningbo University, 818 Fenghua Road, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China (315211), or in Chinese: 浙江省宁波市江北区风华路818号宁波大学 (315211). The address on the website should be typed in Chinese to avoid confusion.

You can get the residence address from the receptionist.

7.What can I do in my spare time? What about the nightlife in Ningbo, or weekend trips?

The University, as expected, would advise you to study during your free time, but if a break is needed, the school and city has many areas that can be explored. Before you leave make sure you have the school’s address, and you know how to return.

You can find various sports facilities on campus and more details are mentioned in the next question.

On the 3rd floor of the International Students Residence, there is a bar (*).

The school has some clubs and you can get the information about them on the front page.

The university holds a big party to show different culture of different country every year and the school also organize some parties and some tour.

For a night out, LaoWaiTan has a good selection of bars and restaurants, and is the perfect location to relax, have dinner or enjoy some dancing. There are also a range of bars near the Ningbo Sheraton.

For more information about weekend trips for the surrounding area, there are many Chinese travel websites that have pages for Ningbo and tell you how to travel to neighboring cities and nearby tourist areas.

8.Does the University has a gymnasium? What about getting involved with sports?

The school gym is located on the first floor in JinXiu Building. It will cost 10 yuan per visit, or, an annual membership is 400 yuan. The gym closes around 4pm each day. Common sports include: football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, etc.

There are a lot of pick-up basketball games at Lin Xingqin Basketball Courts, which are located near the football field. There are also some spots clubs on campus. Information about these clubs are given to you during your class meeting with your class leader, or, you can find information on the faculty website.

9.How do I get to the school from the airport, train station, etc? Where can I buy tickets?

Airport: There is a shuttle bus that can take you from the airport to the train station.

Train Station: Bus 501 can take you directly from the station to the school. You have to get off at “Ningbo Da Xue” (宁波大学). Alternatively, 541 will also take you directly to the school, but the station more difficult to locate.

Taxi: Tell the taxi driver to go to “Ningbo Da Xue”. Print and keep a written copy of the school’s address on you if you can’t speak Chinese.

Tickets: You can get tickets around the city, but it is easiest to get them from the ticket shop behind AnZhong building.

10.How can I get a bus card, and how do I add money? Can I use it for the subway?

There is a city transportation card office at 561 ZhongMa Rd., across from the large hospital listed below. Here you can get a new card, or add money to an existing one. If you are going to get a new card, bring your student ID card, book, passport and probably a translator.

You can also charge your card at some subway stations and locations around the city. The card office offers service on campus too. You can see a queue in front of Jin Xiu building on 15th and 30th of every month.

You can absolutely use your bus card for the subway!

11.Living in residence:

How do I pay tuition and rent?

Tuition and accommodation fees must be paid to the university through direct deposit. You can send the money by either online or international bank transfer, or cash deposit through a local bank near the school (deposit information below). Please note on the statement your name and “tuition & accommodation”. Keep the receipt and submit it to the Students’ Affairs Office in Bao YuShu Building 11 Room 423 before 24th September. The tuition must be paid and received in full before September 24th, so it is advised to deposit the money before September 1st.

How do I get internet access in my room?

To get internet access in your dormitory, you will require an account from China Telecom. Their store is located across from the international residence.

Who do I talk to if there is a problem with my room or roommate?

Talk to your class leader or Miss Wang in Bao YuShu Building 11, Room 423.

Where can I do my laundry?

Must students do their laundry by hand, but the international residence is equipped with washing machines. They are coin operated, and you have to bring your own detergent.

12.How can I get a Chinese phone number?

There are 3 Chinese telephone companies and all of them have offices just off campus in Nongmao (the small village outside East Gate).

You can also use Weixin to talk to you friends, family and classmates. Almost everyone in China uses it, and it’s completely free. It requires an internet connection and a smart phone. It’s English name is WeChat in most app stores.

13.Where is the closest hospital?

There is a hospital just outside of the east gate of the main campus.(*how does the insurance work? Do they speak English?)

There is also a larger hospital (NingBo DaXue FuShu YiYuan)(*) associated with the school downtown. It is about 30 minutes by taxi from the university. You may also take bus 501 from the school (get off at the station with the same name as the hospital).

14. How can I get to know the rules of University?

There is a University Rule Book containing school and residence rules and regulations that should have been given to you during orientation. If you did not recieve a copy of this book, or have lost it, you may get a new one from Students’ Affairs Office in Bao YuShu Building 11, Room 423. Parts of the rules could be read on this website under the name of “Regulations”.
